As other poachers start dropping dead, Leaphorn and Chee must piece together a case as complicated. Si It wasn't the sort of friendship that needed answers. The Navajo culture seems to come alive and you see the fine line they live between their and our cultures. This one's not a hugely remarkable plot, as far as a puzzle goes, but is otherwise very well written. Chee is brought into the story because someone steals a backhoe while he is patrolling a local business, it had complained about people breaking in and taking a truck. The mystery is solved twice, once by Chee and once by Leaphorn.

The story revolves around a missing female anthropologists. Two Navajo officers, Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee must figure out the mystery. If you like your crime thrillers to be smart, suspenseful throughout, characters with some depth and dashing so of humor then this is the book for you. While he is supposed to be watching a back hoe is stolen from the depot. They are also, the detective feels, prickly scientific rivals, a factor that deepens the mystery as does each step on the trail that ends when Leaphorn's mission seems accomplished in an eerie meeting with a mad hermit.

Just finished reading this one again for James Museum Book Club and, as is usually the case, I liked it even better the second time. Officers Leaphorn and Chee search for a missing anthropologist suspected of stealing artifacts from a burial site. The book is perfect for those who wants to read fiction, thriller books. His daughter is now writing books using the same characters plus a new character. Chee and Leaphorn are like yin and yang and the tension between them plus the individual emotional struggles they face in this book add layers of interest. His relationship with Mary is ending Saints be praised! Why is that not allowed? All that is clear is that a Navajo would not be involved; because according to Navajo tradition, stealing pots would make one a Thief of Time. They both determine the actual murderer c This book didn't resonate with me, which I found interesting because it's one of the more popular entries in the series.

Chee's allowing a rather large backhoe get stolen right under his nose will have ties to Leaphorn's investigation. Another good story although some aspects were just a bit too improbable for me to accept. Amid stolen goods and desecrated bones, two corpses are discovered, shot by bullets fitting the gun of the missing scientist. He comes from old money, the best schools, obsessed with Maxie, who scorns his background. The book ends with a very telling sentence that makes you realize that these two men are going to be walking together on the road of friendship now. Leaphorn and Chee meander around the area looking for clues, interviewing other dull and boring characters until suddenly they solve the mystery.
