I read this to get a picture of the inner workings of a cerebral narcissist. His first important play, All My Sons 1947 , was followed by his most famous work, Death of a Salesman 1949, Pulitzer Prize , the tragedy of a man destroyed by false values that are in large part the values of his society. At one point she demands that certain musicians be fired, and though Quentin does her bidding, he sees that her personality is changing drastically; she becomes paranoid and abusive in her language, resorting finally to pills on top of whiskey. . The book delved into some of the pain that happens when one is partnered with a person who is perpetually unbalanced. I also don't care for this perpetuated image of Marilyn Monroe being a failure. Most of these victims died in the concentration camps. His last wife, Inge Morath, a professional photographer, with whom he had two more children, died in 2002. Marilyn was abused and abandoned and a child and was needy and constantly anxious. I hate it when I reread plays that I didn't like either time! But underlying it all, I see now, there was a presumption. Now of course it's not that overt-- her character is 'Maggie,' a singer instead of an actress, just as Arthur's stand-in is 'Quentin,' a lawyer instead of a playwright, but the veil is very thin.
