Augusta Gein, also known as Augusta Gein Gustafsson, was a Swedish-born American serial killer who was active in the 1940s and 1950s. She is perhaps most well-known for being the inspiration for the character of Norman Bates in the novel Psycho, which was later adapted into a film by Alfred Hitchcock.
Gein was born in 1906 in Westboro, Wisconsin, the second of two children. Her father was an alcoholic who physically and emotionally abused both Gein and her mother. Gein's mother was a religious zealot who preached to her children about the evil of the world and the importance of being a good person. Despite her mother's efforts, Gein struggled with mental health issues throughout her life, including psychosis and schizophrenia.
After the death of her father in 1940, Gein and her brother inherited the family farm. However, her brother died a few years later, leaving Gein alone on the farm. It was during this time that she began to exhibit strange and disturbing behavior.
In 1944, Gein was arrested for the murder of a local hardware store owner, and a search of her property revealed evidence of multiple murders. In 1957, she was found guilty of the murder of one woman and was institutionalized in a mental hospital. She died in 1984 at the age of 77.
Despite the horror of Gein's crimes, her story has continued to fascinate the public, and she has been the subject of numerous books, articles, and films.
