Once Becket makes his decision, though, he sticks to it. It stands today as solid story-telling and good theatre but it is not a particularly deep play. I am wary of making historical reaches, however, I will say at times this relationship felt like Achilles a "Sire, we loved each other and I think he cannot forgive me for preferring God to him. This political climate must have had a role in Anouilh's engendering of Becket, which has as a major sub-theme the tension between the Normans and the Saxons. I have never seen the film nor have I ever read the play before. Supported by only his meager conscription salary, Anouilh married the actress Monelle Valentin in 1931. Like all Anouilh it is incredibly elegant, poetic, witty and worldly-wise. Sobczak and Frank N.
