Bill Tilghman was a legendary lawman in the American Old West. He was born William Matthew Tilghman Jr. on October 22, 1854, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of William Matthew Tilghman Sr. and Mary Jane Tilghman.
Tilghman's father was a captain in the Union Army during the Civil War and later served as a U.S. marshal in Kansas. After the war, the family moved to Kansas, where Tilghman grew up and received his education.
In 1875, Tilghman joined the Kansas State Militia and served as a deputy sheriff in Dodge City. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled and brave lawman, and was eventually appointed chief of police in Dodge City.
In the late 1870s, Tilghman began working as a U.S. marshal, serving in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. He was known for his ability to track down and bring in dangerous criminals, and was considered one of the best lawmen of his time.
