Coco Before Chanel is a French biographical film released in 2009. It tells the story of Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel, one of the most influential fashion designers of all time. The film begins with a young Gabrielle living in an orphanage in the French countryside. She is eventually placed in a convent, where she learns to sew and becomes interested in fashion.

As a young adult, Gabrielle moves to the French capital of Paris and begins working as a seamstress. She is eventually hired by a wealthy socialite named Etienne Balsan, with whom she has a tumultuous relationship. Gabrielle begins to develop her own fashion ideas, and starts to make a name for herself in the Parisian fashion scene.

Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, Gabrielle is determined to succeed and make a name for herself in the male-dominated world of fashion. She opens her own shop, which becomes a hit with the Parisian elite. She is known for her innovative designs, which reject the traditional corsets and restrictive clothing that were popular at the time, and instead focus on comfortable, practical clothing that flatters the natural female form.

Gabrielle's success as a designer is not without its challenges, however. She faces criticism and ridicule from the traditional fashion establishment, and is forced to deal with the many personal and professional challenges that come with fame. Despite these challenges, she remains a strong and independent woman, and her legacy as a pioneer in the fashion industry lives on to this day.

In conclusion, Coco Before Chanel is a powerful and inspiring story of a woman who dared to defy the expectations of her time and pursue her dreams against all odds. It is a testament to Gabrielle Chanel's talent, determination, and strength of character, and serves as a reminder of the enduring power of the human spirit.

But this sliver of her life is paltry, material-wise. In her free time, she used to sing in cabaret frequented by cavalry officers. . Tautou, known for her role in Amelie, does succeed in emulating Chanels fierceness and apathy, but the problem is the plot itself. To have a personality, you have to forget the clothes. Ernesto is crushed by a falling church bell as in his previous life, but the photo falls into the water and disappears.

When you forget the clothes, it is only the style that stays. Fashion has to do with the ideas, the way we live, what is happening. Music halls attract sugar daddies; they both size up the situation and make their choices. Through Balsan, she meets the bold actress Emilienne Tautou isn't stereotypically beautiful but more uniquely fetching. That's not how it works.

But that could've been condensed into an hour, leaving another hour for more of her life. There has been controversy over the hemming of Chanel's reputation as a Nazi sympathizer. Sadly, it never becomes a great film as it only focuses on one part of Chanels life, which Coco Before Chanel possessed the ability to match other famous French Biopic La Vie En Rose, with Audrey Tautou in the cast and a subject of one of the most prominent figures in the fashion industry. Chanel was ambitious, determined and hard-working lady whose effort clearly reflected in her work. Anne Fontaine really did a fine job of showing the trials and tribulations, the ordeals that Coco had to go through in order to be vastly successful.

This epic true story stars Shirley MacLaine, Malcolm McDowell and Barbora Bobulova. Though her career takes off, her personal life becomes more complicated when she falls in love with Balsan's former best friend Arthur Capel. She's both a seamstress for the performers and a singer, adopting the nickname Coco from her father in early childhood. Her nonconformist designs, stressing simplicity and comfort, revolutionized the fashion industry for the next 30 years. Overall, Chanel is a perfect example of a film with a good premise and subject, but fails to reach the potential that it is allotted. This speaks volumes about what a legendary style and fashion icon she was. I worked with the costume designer on the birth of each of item of clothing - the mariner's top, the trousers she wore to ride horses, the pyjamas, the little black dress - all the codes of Chanel.

As a result, Ernesto's legacy is destroyed and the community honors Héctor instead. Show more While Tautou has presence and Poelvoorde is fearsome as a chauvinistic lover who is surprised to discover how much he cares, the movie doesn't leave one breathless like the designer's fashions do. Coco is emotionally devastated, but rationally determined to continue asserting herself, her independence, her unique style. As a French costume designer, it comes as no surprise that Leterrier was a fan of Chanel long before she was approached for the film. A team of 40 people worked flat out on the costumes for five months, creating, among other things, more than 700 hats. Letterier is audibly affronted by this suggestion.

Her extraordinary fashion sense was not just limited to couture clothing but also reflected in fragrance, handbags and jewellery. It is the style of somebody - the way someone moves and thinks. When she learns that the bank is lending her money for her new business in Paris only thanks to guarantees offered by Capel, she shows aversion, and she insists to deal with the bank by herself, understanding that her independence and her success will not be for real if she depends on a man. It was a way for me to meet her. Is it possible for her to be with the man she loves? When Capel died in a car accident, in 1919, Chanel was shattered. Héctor attempts to return Miguel to his relatives, but Miguel escapes and infiltrates Ernesto's mansion, learning along the way that an old friendship between the two deteriorated before Héctor's death. Coco continues developing independently her own new vision of how a modern woman should be dressed, in a style that conveys freedom and self-determination, rather than being a man's toy.

Coco Before Chanel Movie Review

Its certainly not a bad film but its not one of the most memorable either, hence my rating. Probably one of my fifty favourite films by a female director. Thanks to the reverence that the brand affords, she was able to source extant vintage Chanel to dress the models. Imelda blesses Miguel with no conditions attached so he can return to the Land of the Living, where he plays a song for Coco that Héctor wrote for her during her childhood. The song sparks her memory of Héctor and revitalizes her, and she gives Miguel the torn-out piece of the photo from the ofrenda, which shows Héctor's face.

Coco Chanel Biography

coco before chanel summary

How she built her life in the beginning, I found very touching and incredible. In one scene, she cuts a swathe through a crowded ballroom in a stark black dress, and is infinitely more elegant than the wearers of fussy frocks all around her. One can only assume that, as in the real world of high fashion, money was no object. In return, Héctor asks Miguel to take his photo back to the Land of the Living so he can visit his daughter before she forgets him and he disappears completely. Chanel is known for rethinking women's clothing, embracing simplicity, modernity and androgyny over the elaborate outfits in fashion at the time. Chanel had a tough time in Aubazine, as it was a demanding place, and thus she fled from there to boarding house for Catholic girls in the town of Moulins. By underlining that, the movie becomes more absorbing.
