George Peele (1556-1596) was an English Renaissance dramatist and poet, best known for his plays and masques. Peele was born in London and educated at Oxford University, where he likely studied classical literature and drama. He became a member of the Inner Temple, one of the four Inns of Court, in 1578, and was admitted to the bar in 1582.

Peele is known for his contributions to the English stage, particularly his plays and masques, which were popular in the late Elizabethan era. His plays often featured fantastical elements, such as the use of magic and mythical creatures, and were often based on classical myths and legends. Peele's most famous play is probably "The Old Wives' Tale," a comedy that follows the misadventures of two old women who are trying to marry off their daughters. Peele also wrote several masques, which were elaborate court entertainments that featured music, dance, and elaborate costumes.

In addition to his plays and masques, Peele was also a prolific poet and wrote a number of poems, including "The Arraignment of Paris," a retelling of the myth of the judgement of Paris. Peele was also a member of the literary group known as the "University Wits," a group of writers and intellectuals who were influential in the development of English literature in the Elizabethan era.

Despite his success as a playwright and poet, Peele's life was cut short by illness and he died in 1596 at the age of 40. However, his contributions to the English stage and literary tradition have had a lasting impact and his works continue to be studied and performed today.
