Gladiator is a 2000 film that tells the story of Maximus Decimus Meridius, a Roman general who is betrayed by the emperor's son, Commodus, and sentenced to fight as a gladiator in the Colosseum. The film was directed by Ridley Scott and starred Russell Crowe as Maximus. It was a commercial and critical success, winning five Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Crowe and Best Costume Design.
The film is set in ancient Rome, during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, who is portrayed as a wise and just ruler. Commodus, his son, is depicted as a power-hungry and selfish man who is jealous of Maximus' popularity with the people and the army. When Marcus Aurelius dies, Commodus takes the throne and orders Maximus to be executed. Maximus escapes, but is captured by slave traders and sold to a gladiator trainer, Proximo. Maximus becomes a successful gladiator and is eventually brought to Rome to fight in the Colosseum.
While the film is based on historical events and characters, it takes significant liberties with the historical record. Marcus Aurelius was indeed the Roman Emperor at the time, and Commodus did succeed him as ruler. However, there is no historical evidence to suggest that Maximus was a real person or that he fought as a gladiator. Commodus was also known to have been a great admirer of gladiator games and is believed to have fought as a gladiator himself, though not in the Colosseum.
Despite its historical inaccuracies, the film is a compelling portrayal of the world of the gladiators and the excesses of the Roman Empire. The depiction of the Colosseum and the gladiator games is particularly striking, and the film's attention to detail in its costume and set design gives a sense of realism to the ancient setting. The performances of Crowe and the supporting cast, including Joaquin Phoenix as Commodus and Connie Nielsen as Lucilla, are also strong.

The snob in us believes that movies are always based on literature. The character of Maximus The hero of the film, killer of the evil Commodus and champion of the people never existed. These advertisements were not shown in the film, mostly because the producers thought film audiences would not believe it since it is so similar to our modern sports. Movie moguls speak: interviews with top film producers. Rather, he's a complete fabrication created solely for the film and has no mention in history whatsoever.
While the discrepancies are clearly displayed, Ward does not ask the more interesting question of why they happen.
