The Hunger Games is a young adult science fiction novel written by Suzanne Collins. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where the nation of Panem has risen from the ashes of North America. Panem is made up of a wealthy Capitol city and twelve poorer districts.
As punishment for a previous rebellion, each year the Capitol holds a televised event called the Hunger Games. During the Hunger Games, one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 are chosen at random from each district to compete in a brutal fight to the death. The last person standing is crowned the victor and is showered with wealth and fame.
The protagonist of the story is 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen, a skilled hunter and archer living in District 12. When her younger sister is chosen as a tribute for the Hunger Games, Katniss volunteers to take her place. Along with the other tribute from her district, Peeta Mellark, Katniss is sent to the Capitol to prepare for the Games.
As the tributes are trained and groomed for the event, Katniss and Peeta struggle to find a way to survive the deadly competition. They must not only fight against the other tributes, but also against the Capitol's manipulation of the Games.

The Hunger Games: Katniss Everdeen
The only person Katniss feels that she can truly be free with is her hunting partner, Gale. There were once 13 districts, but the districts all rebelled against the Capitol. Tributes from different districts are pitted against each other for survival. By the end of the morning, Gale and Katniss have a dozen fish, a bag of greens, and a gallon of strawberries. The Capital controls the districts through fear and violence, sponsoring an annual Hunger Games competition that requires each district to send two tributes to fight to the death on national television.
The next day, Katniss and Peeta attend group training, and the tributes from rich districts who have trained for the Games their whole lives, called Career Tributes, show off their skills. The woods appear dangerous at firstâand they areâbut to those who know how to take a second look, they also present an opportunity for food. Katniss is an avid hunter, something she learned from her father. Effie is the epitome of Capital self-indulgence and decadence. Later she learns that he is telling the truth and that he has genuine feelings for her.
Eventually the streams and ponds dry up, and they know the only source of water left is the lake near the Cornucopia. Gale has brought a loaf of real bakery bread to share on the morning of reaping day, and he and Katniss make a meal out of the bread, goat cheese, and blackberries from surrounding bushes. The Gamemakers announce that all remaining contestants can get something they badly need at the Cornucopia where the games began. Peeta and Katniss threaten to commit dual suicide, which would ruin the Games, and they are hence awarded a dual victory. She is a 16-year old girl, and she travels stealthily into the woods in order to hunt for food for her family. Boggs and Katniss both recognize this as a threat to her life, and Boggs warns Katniss not to trust the power-hungry Coin, as she is willing to do anythingâincluding killing Katnissâto get what she wants. The Hunger Games is one of the best methods that the Capitol has for ensuring that the districts remain divided.
Right before she is launched into the arena, Katniss witnesses her stylist, Cinna, being beaten to death for designing her a Mockingjay costume during the interview. At the start of the Hunger Games, Katniss suspects that Peeta has aligned himself with tributes from strong districts so he can hunt her down and kill her. However, Katniss also gets stung and begins hallucinating, and she vaguely remembers that Peetaâwho had seemed to be allied with the Careersâput himself in danger and ends up saving her life and telling her to run. And Katniss does immediately set off to find Peeta. Panem is controlled by the Capitol, a city with abundant resources that keeps the other Districts under its boot. Crane lets out genetically modified creatures to chase down the competitors.
Katniss uses the self-destruct feature of the Holo to give Finnick a quick death instead of an agonizing one, and she leads Gale, Peeta and what remains of the film crew up to the streets of the Capitol. Katniss does not kill herself at the end of the Hunger Games. Though there are fewer pods underground, the squad soon discovers they are no safer there. Furthermore, before the Games, she has little interest in boys and is instead focused on her responsibilities, and though she develops feelings for Peeta and becomes aware of feelings for Gale during the Games, romance remains a peripheral interest for her at the end of the novel. The novel begins on the day of the "reaping," when each District must select two tributes, one male and one female, to represent them in the Hunger Games. The tribute is about to kill her when Thresh, the male tribute from District 11 who came to the Games with Rue, kills the girl instead.
They are the last three standing and must fight. Cinna Cinna is one of the few people from the Capital that Katniss can actually stand. Year after year, District 12 has a poor showing in the Hunger Games. Though at first Katniss thinks Peeta is working against her, it eventually becomes clear that he has been trying to protect her, and when the Gamemakers change the rules so that two tributes from the same district can win, she sets off to find him. Each district is responsible for a different economic activity. He has erroneously collected deadly nightlock berries, and District Six's female tribute ate handfuls of them because she assumed he was collecting them to eat, and that they were safe. Twelve districts in Panem have taken up arms against the cruelty of President Snow and the exploitation by the Capitol.
For a while, there was peace and prosperity for Panem, which consisted of a shining Capitol and thirteen surrounding districts. Katniss has complicated feelings toward Peeta because as children, at risk of punishment, he gave her some bread when her family was starving. The next day Katniss goes in search of water. Katniss kills the other tribute, and when Rue dies, she covers her body in flowers. Gale demonstrates warring desires.
