"Impulse" is a young adult science fiction novel written by Ellen Hopkins and published in 2006. The novel tells the story of three teens who are struggling to find their way in a world where they feel misunderstood and disconnected.
The main character, Vanessa, is a high school junior who is struggling to come to terms with her identity as a lesbian. She feels isolated and alone, and is desperate for someone to understand her. When she meets Jake, a charismatic and mysterious boy who seems to have all the answers, she is drawn to him and his offer of a better life.
As Vanessa becomes more involved with Jake, she finds herself swept up in a world of danger and secrecy. She is forced to confront her deepest fears and desires as she struggles to find her place in the world. Along the way, she meets two other teens, Tony and Rachel, who are also struggling with their own issues. Tony is a troubled young man who is struggling with addiction and abuse, while Rachel is a gifted musician who is struggling to find her voice.
Together, the three teens embark on a journey of self-discovery and healing as they learn to accept and embrace their true selves. Along the way, they must confront the challenges and obstacles that stand in their way, including the disapproval and judgment of their peers and the dangers of their own impulsivity.
Overall, "Impulse" is a poignant and thought-provoking novel that explores the complexities of identity, relationships, and the search for meaning in a world that can often be hostile and unforgiving. It is a powerful reminder of the importance of self-acceptance and the need to embrace our true selves in order to find happiness and fulfillment.

They leave their son all alone to deal with the hardships of life. The reasons seem to be typical - Vanessa suffers from bipolar disorder and cutting is her only way to get her mood swings under control. Also, I really don't understand why the book was in the form of poetry, because it didn't read like poetry at all and could have just been written normally. I love the verse in terms of writing style. Impulse is part of the Prime Power collection by Ellen Wille. They don't help the characters at all. Ellen Hopkins has no idea how human beings talk to each other, let alone teenagers.
This is my second time reading this book. Man, am I tired of reading that shit. Their language was also aggravating. But overall I really loved Impulse and can't wait to read more of Ellen Hopkin's books! I'll show you how a real woman makes love to men such as you, and I don't give a damn how high the stakes are. I think there was maybe one adult in this novel who wasn't portrayed as evil, horrible people. The main character of the story are Tony Daniels, Connor Sykes, Vanessa O'Reilly.
Ellen Hopkin's books are dark, they are not the type of book you pick up if you are looking for a light read. He was sexually assaulted, which led him to believe he was gay?? The only reason I picked up this book was because I needed to read something in verse for my reading challenge. I mean, Justin was considered crazy because he had strong religious beliefs. For everyone else this is a tragic yet hopeful story that you will be thinking about long after you've read it. Connor is an all-American boy who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth.
Half number one is fantastic: well-written, interesting, moving, gritty. And the way she would describe her dad as if she hated him, then as if he was the greatest person in the world was just very confusing. But until Vanessa tries to kill herself, no one pays too much attention to the fact her mother is delusional and abusing her children. What does each learn about love? I don't like realistic books but Ellen Hopkins touched my heart, my soul, my everything with this book. I guess verse just adds even more impact to the narration as it skims over unnecessary details and focuses on raw emotion. Now 9 years later - I am no longer at the library, I have been to America twice, My Mum has passed away, I am in a committed relationship and have brought a house with my partner and I am 34 years old. It seemed unnecessary to me, to be honest.
It does not encourage those going through similar things to seek help from adults and professionals, which is such a missed opportunity. In school, in a marathon, in life, in anything you can think about. However, she needs to stop stereotyping neuroatypical and lgbtq people. This novel, written in free-verse poetry, is set at a mental institution and follows three teens who tried to commit suicide. Another 5 star book from Ellen Hopkins with an end, that if you haven't guessed close to it, will shock you completly. Back before I had been dedicated to writing reviews on what I read. The book was first published in January 23rd 2007 and the latest edition of the book was published in January 23rd 2007 which eliminates all the known issues and printing errors.
Pray you could somehow stop uncertainty, somehow stop the loathing, somehow stop the pain. I'll never stop cutting, lithium or no lithium. He makes these weird sex references and metaphors and made me extremely uncomfortable, and it bordered on being perv-y. . Instead, I feel overwhelmed by a sense of defeat. I felt for each of these characters. Suicide is not something to be taken lightly, and it is also something very hard to grasp.
I just feel that Hopkins uses the shock factor too much and it becomes less believable because of it. It's brought up once near the very end and never talked about again. But dig a little deeper and find a boy who is in constant battle with his parents, his life, himself. I'm supposed to sympathize with this character? All she did was act anti-social with everyone else. I feel like it's a book for neurotypical teens who want to feel like their life doesn't suck. This book was an honest and realistic account of depression and suicide. Conner, Vanessa, and Tony have unique relationships with their parents.

Impulse follows three characters, one of which is Conner, the twin brother of Cara from Perfect aka the reason why I picked up this book. Only love can make me quit. In terms of character, I had some major issues as well. I find it difficult to believe that this author has ever heard a conversation between two human people. It is disgusting and it is horrifying to read. What experiences has each character had that led to confusion about love? This book portrays treatment facilities in a bad light and the characters that recover recover through falling in love, but this is just not accurate.
The Impulse nape has a beautifully tapered hairline to ensure a very comfortable and secure fit. However, this book reinforces the idea that gay people are gay because there is something wrong with them, and that being gay is a form of perversion. You will laugh with the characters, cry with the characters, and mourn with the characters as they try to deny the impulse. He comes off as manipulative, jealous, judgemental, homophobic, and rude. I felt like I really understood them, and connected with them in some ways. I was amazed by his development throughout the story, and found myself relating to him at some parts of the book well, I related to all three in a sense.
