I have always been fascinated by language. As a child, I was exposed to both English and Spanish, as my parents spoke Spanish at home and we lived in an English-speaking community. I quickly became fluent in both languages, and the ability to communicate with a wider range of people only increased my curiosity about language.
In school, I took French and Latin, and enjoyed learning about the grammar and structure of these languages. However, it wasn't until I studied abroad in Spain during college that I truly fell in love with language learning.
Living in a foreign country, surrounded by people speaking a language that was not my own, was both challenging and exhilarating. I was forced to use my language skills on a daily basis, whether it was ordering food at a restaurant or having a conversation with a local. It was amazing to see how quickly my Spanish improved, and I was able to have more in-depth conversations with people than I ever thought possible.
After my study abroad experience, I returned to the United States with a newfound passion for language learning. I decided to minor in Spanish and continued to study the language in my free time. I also began to teach myself other languages, such as Italian and German, using resources like language learning apps and immersion programs.
I have come to understand that language learning is not just about being able to communicate with others, but about understanding and connecting with different cultures.
