London is a poem written by John Davidson in the late 19th century. It is a reflection on the city of London and its people, capturing the bustle and energy of this vibrant metropolis.
The poem begins with a description of the city as a "great sea," with its "tides of human life" ebbing and flowing through the streets. Davidson writes of the "throngs of men that slake their thirst / At taverns by the Thames," and the "hundreds of thousands" who walk the streets. He marvels at the diversity of the city, with its "folk from every clime" and its "tongues of every land."
Despite its chaos and noise, Davidson finds beauty in the city, describing the "dazzling shops" and the "gleaming spires" that rise up into the sky. He writes of the "majestic Thames" that flows through the city, and the "rich man's palace" and the "beggar's den" that stand side by side.
As he walks through the city, Davidson reflects on the people of London, and the way they live their lives. He writes of the "drunken sot" and the "gaunt-faced beggar," but also of the "fair-faced maid" and the "honoured statesman." He sees the city as a place of both poverty and wealth, where all types of people coexist.
In the final stanza, Davidson speaks directly to London, telling it that he loves it despite its flaws. He writes, "I love thy every street and lane, / Thy great sea-beating heart of stone, / Thy myriad, tireless feet of men, / Thy endless, endless talk."
London is a beautifully written poem that captures the spirit of the city and its people. It is a tribute to the diverse and dynamic nature of London, and a celebration of its enduring energy and vitality.
