Matthew Poncelet is a fictional character who appears in the film Dead Man Walking. The character is played by actor Sean Penn and is based on the real-life convicted killer Elmo Patrick Sonnier.
In the film, Poncelet is sentenced to death for the rape and murder of a teenage girl and the murder of her boyfriend. Sister Helen Prejean, a Catholic nun and anti-death penalty activist, becomes Poncelet's spiritual advisor and accompanies him on his journey towards his execution.

In his second film as writer-director, Robbins views his characters with a clear-eyed grace that reminds me of the Jonathan Demme of Melvin and Howard. Of course, the film is also about the death penalty, and it even was said that he was acting on nothing else: Matthew Poncelet Sean Penn is in fact convicted to death, the chances of clemency are approximately zero, the execution is imminent. Given the well know npolitical views and activism of Penn, Robbins, and Sarandon, I was surprised with how the film ultimately treated the issues at hand, and am very thankful for how itr all ended up. .
