The Monroe Survey, also known as the Monroe Doctrine Centennial Half Dollar, was a commemorative coin released in 1925 by the United States Mint. The coin was released to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Monroe Doctrine, a foreign policy statement issued by President James Monroe in 1823.
The Monroe Doctrine declared that the Western Hemisphere was no longer open for colonization by European powers and that any attempts by these powers to extend their territorial or political influence in the region would be viewed as a threat to the United States. The Doctrine also stated that the United States would not interfere in the existing affairs of European nations, but would consider any intervention in the region as a potential threat to its own security.
The Monroe Survey coin featured a bust of President Monroe on the obverse side, with the inscriptions "James Monroe" and "President of the United States 1817-1825." The reverse side of the coin featured a depiction of the Americas, with the inscriptions "Monroe Doctrine Centennial" and "Half Dollar." The coin was designed by Charles E. Barber, Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.
