In between, we are treated and I do mean treated to the stories of six more women: many left motherless at a young age; some ahead of their time; and most of their place in that time. Except the ministers, who universally deny it. Frances, the repellent housekeeper, is right on one count, at least. Without a doubt, Munro is a lady, meaning a gentlewoman, but her writing can be earthy and spicy and quite realistic about old men who want their younger wives to talk dirty to them or boys who want to jump girls so bad they call them ugly first, as if to drive them away, not embrace them. A couple of times I found myself wondering if what I thought had happened really had. It recounts her life as a captive. Not the case here at all.
During her distinguished career she has been the recipient of many awards and prizes, including the Man Booker International Prize, three of Canada's Governor General's Literary Awards and two of its Giller Prizes, the Rea Award for the Short Story, the Lannan Literary Award, England's W. So now I'm re-reading the collection again, and it's all coming back to me, and yes, this is Alice Munro at her best which is pretty damn good. The animals are all stuffed, dead and stuffed and mounted. As a girl Liza lived opposite Ladner. Rhea finds a way to be sure. I found myself looking thorough beginnings and middles and ends, trying to orient around what exactly I thought of each, wondering if my speed of reading had impacted my understanding more than I thought. I think the thing I like best about her writing is the way the style and the content mix.
The title story is a trip too, but wasn't fueled by any humor, only my impatience to find out what happened to the disappeared teenager. When a teenage girl goes missing, rumours abound in the town of Carstairs… For me, Open Secrets only scores 6 out of a possible 10. Maureen had wondered: But suppose you did see something? In what way is this a story of personal survival? At the end, we know, although the girl from the orphanage still keeps many secrets to herself. See how vain she is, said Ladner's angular prancing. And the intuition can be over in a flash and can be lost over time.

Because of a tale told by a woman who lives near the woods, a strange elderly man falls under suspicion, but no body is found and there is no eviden I don't think it's Alice Munro's fault. Yes, her collections are all masterpieces. Is it just Ladner she wants controlled, or herself as well? I think I just overdosed on her short stories. Words that lodge in a girl's mind and clear a precarious space there with a light buzz around it. To me — what Maureen sees is not so much murder — but the terrible dislocation of the psyche that occurs when sexuality is denied.
