This gives the two a moment together giving Sonny the last part of what he wanted the rockets to do. He is the hard-headed mine foreman in Coalwood. He teaches Sonny something about girls. It ends with his mother discovering his father has taken him into the mine and insisting that he will never work in it. Jake is a mining engineer. The work at the mine is horrific, but honorable, and so Homer Jr, or Sonny as he is called, feels pressured into work in the mine.

As a result, Coalwood became one of the safest and most pleasant mining towns in the state. Baskin came into the role after making appearances in Moscow on the Hudson 1984 , The Name of the Rose 1986 , Love Affair 1994 , Air Force One 1997 , Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery 1997 , and hitting the small screen on St. Sonny watches until someone is brought out on a stretcher: Ike Bykovski, a man who was working in the mine, at least in part because he had helped Sonny to build rockets. He is always scheming ways of making money, from the failed iron scrap attempt—which took an entire summer, yielded a net loss of one dollar, not counting the destruction of borrowed equipment, and almost killed Sonny—to the profitable harvesting of ginseng. He also introduces them to a writer of a small newspaper, Basil Oglethorpe.
