Simon Birch is a 1998 American drama film directed by Mark Steven Johnson and starring Ian Michael Smith, Joseph Mazzello, and Ashley Judd. The film is based on the novel "A Prayer for Owen Meany" by John Irving and follows the story of two young boys, Simon Birch and Joe Wenteworth, who are inseparable friends despite their differences.
One of the central questions in the film is whether or not Simon Birch, who was born with a severe growth deficiency, will be able to fulfill his destiny and prove that "God doesn't make mistakes." Throughout the film, Simon is determined to prove that he is just as capable and deserving as anyone else, and he constantly challenges the limitations that have been placed on him because of his size.
Another key question in the film is whether or not Joe will be able to come to terms with the fact that his father, Ben, is not his biological father. I give it 2 thumbs up… Hey! That said, I found the movie third-rate, and it would have been utterly unwatchable without its mostly stellar cast. My husband and I saw Simon Birch, and thought it was a sweet story. Some people who did not like Simon Birch were: his own parents because they simply did not know what to make of him, and his pastor at church because he did not like that Simon seemed to think he knew what God would think is acceptable of the church and he openly criticized what the pastor organized and suggested. This was a wonderful movie that I will recommend to all of my friends and will definitely see again! Why is this escape so necessary for him? What can you infer about Simon Birch from this scene? My wife and I liked Simon Birch and she my wife cried through most of the film while I choked backed tears. A beautiful depiction of life today and with a wonderful inclusion of faith, power and the determination of a boy convinced that God has a purpose for all things. I just feel they copped out by doing that—the theme was beautiful and one that needs to be heard, but I felt it was instead made as an undertone to the movie. . I would highly recommend it!!!
