Introduction:
DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the genetic material that carries the instructions for the development and function of all living organisms. It is found in the nucleus of cells and is composed of a long chain of nucleotides, which are made up of a sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base. There are four different nitrogenous bases in DNA: adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), and thymine (T). The sequence of these bases is what determines the genetic information in an organism.
In this lab, we extracted and analyzed the DNA of strawberries using common household materials. Strawberries are a good source of DNA because they have a high water content and their cells are easily ruptured, making it easy to access their genetic material.
Materials:
- Strawberries
- Zipper-lock bag
- Meat tenderizer
- Liquid dish soap
- Salt
- Cool water
- Cheesecloth
- Clear plastic cup
- Rubbing alcohol
- Toothpicks
Procedure:
- Place a strawberry in a zipper-lock bag and use a rolling pin or other heavy object to crush the strawberry.
- Add a pinch of salt and a few drops of liquid dish soap to the bag.
- Add a small amount of cool water to the bag and mix everything together.
- Strain the mixture through a piece of cheesecloth into a clear plastic cup.
- Add a few drops of rubbing alcohol to the mixture and stir gently.
- Allow the mixture to sit for a few minutes.
- Observe the layer that forms at the top of the mixture. This is the strawberry DNA.
- Use a toothpick to carefully remove some of the DNA from the mixture and place it on a microscope slide or other surface for further analysis.
Results:
Upon adding the rubbing alcohol to the mixture, a white, stringy substance should form at the top of the cup. This substance is the DNA of the strawberry. It should be visible to the naked eye and can be carefully removed with a toothpick for further analysis.
Conclusion:
In this lab, we successfully extracted and observed the DNA of a strawberry using common household materials. This experiment demonstrates the basic principles of DNA extraction and analysis, and provides a fun and engaging way for students to learn about this important biological molecule.

Since the experiment was performed only for observation, no hypothesis was present in this experiment and consequently no null hypothesis either. The type of sodium chemical can vary depending on what is trying to be accomplished. DNA is not soluble in alcohol. It will start to look like a small ball of cotton. Moreover, the results obtained by the groups using the YouTube method were adequate for comparative analysis of the methods. After, the test tube is filled with the mixture you must add ice-cold alcohol until the test tube is halfway filled. This ultimately, removes the contents of the cell from the deoxyribonucleic acid DNA and further exposes it for the detergent solution.
Strawberry DNA Extraction Lab
Data Processing and Presentation: In this experiment we extracted DNA from two strawberries. In order to extract the DNA, the carbohydrates need to be separated from the DNA. The solution was mostly clear, but a little frothy and yellow from the soap. Therefore, future studies should focus on either finding out the best method that will make amplification easier or finding a modification to salting out a method to minimize the afore-highlighted limitations. As described in the procedure using strawberries, the first step was to mash them into pulp using a mortar and pestle. For instance, DNA extraction has been used in the production of genetically modifies organisms GMOs pioneered by Harbert Boyer and Stanley Cohen in 1973 Zhang, Sun, and Ma, 2017 p412.

The tomato is larger, tastier, and stays fresher longer than commercial tomatoes on the market. Line the funnel with the filter paper and put the funnel's tube into the test tube. While one would assume that their bodies would just readjust and revert back to having a genome that promoted effective water-based genes, that isn't the reality. Using the bamboo skewer or toothpick, gently wind up the precipitated DNA. Into each sample, one hundred and seventy microliters of 5M NaCl were added and flicked for ten seconds to mix. That is why these diseases are more prevalent in people who come from families where some members have suffered the same illness. From this experiment we can learn the basic procedure for DNA extraction and this can help us further our knowledge of DNA and our later scientific studies that involve similar content.

This could be due to other biomolecules binding the DNA leading to high molecular weight. The same goes for the independent and dependent variables; since nothing was being tested, there were no variables to alter and measure. Include a small-labeled drawing. The salting out the technique has its limitations. During a criminal investigation, all DNA should be collected, properly preserved and tested, but at times this does not occur or the technology was not available for this process to occur. Put the strawberries in plastic bag, push out all air, and use your hands to mash the strawberries for 2 minutes 4. Over time DNA extraction methods have increased and instruments such as the centrifuge, a gel box, and bead beater are different methods and instruments that are being used for DNA extraction.
