The Dinner Party is a short story by Mona Gardner that tells the tale of a dinner party gone awry. The story begins with the narrator, a young woman named Mary, preparing for a dinner party that she is hosting at her apartment. She is excited to have her friends over and has gone to great lengths to make sure that everything is perfect, including setting the table with her finest china and silverware.
As the guests begin to arrive, Mary introduces them to one another and the party gets underway. There is a mix of people at the dinner party, including a famous actor, a diplomat, and a scientist. Despite the diverse group of guests, the party is going well and everyone seems to be having a good time.
However, things take a turn when the scientist, Dr. West, begins to talk about his work. He is a nuclear physicist and starts to discuss the dangers of nuclear weapons and the possibility of a global nuclear war. His comments start to make everyone at the party uneasy and the conversation becomes tense.
As the partygoers try to change the subject, Dr. West becomes more and more insistent on discussing his views. He becomes so fixated on the topic that he begins to ignore the other guests and even interrupts the actor when he tries to speak. The partygoers become uncomfortable and try to leave, but Dr. West refuses to let them go.
Finally, Mary intervenes and asks Dr. West to leave. He becomes angry and storms out of the apartment, leaving the party in shambles. The remaining guests try to salvage the evening, but the damage has been done and the party ends on a sour note.
In the end, The Dinner Party is a cautionary tale about the dangers of letting one person's opinions dominate a conversation and ruin a social gathering. It shows the importance of listening to others and being considerate of their feelings, even if you disagree with their views.
