In this heaven, mothers and daughters suckle each other; yet simultaneously, as if trailing the dust of the earth behind them, they worry about money, make practical decisions and go to work. So this was just okay for me. But even with that, this seemed to drag in so many places. And beyond the horror is the transcendent vision of salvation through love in the mythical state of Israel. There wasn't any contrast to create tension.
The reader is just as uncertain as the protagonist as the scene unfurls. It is a dream of electrifying eroticism and inexplicable violence, recounted by a young woman to her analyst, Sigmund Freud. Thomas himself an English poet so effortlessly stretches the laws of prosody that the poem seems to speak directly from the unconscious. Now, at 45 years of age, I have read it from beginning to end and it is a truly spectacular piece of writing! Spoiler: I think this might be a spoiler, but I wasn't exactly sure what was going on for the last 20 pages, so it might not be. Though all are worth reading.

The White Hotel is creative, thought-provoking, and emotionally scarring. . Adorno did not, as it may initially seem, intend the Holocaust to signify the end of cultural creativity. The book has seven parts. I listened to this book and must confess that I turned the volume way down during the particularly gory scenes.
Of course being Freud he suspects hysteria and encourages her to share her dreams which she does in the form of the poem and journal. . For example, the fictional case history 'written' by the novel's Freud would mean nothing without the previous two sections 'written' by his patient; the same is true of the following sections relating her later life and that of the world at large, each with a Freudian trope of train journeys. The kind of book that creates one of the elemental delights of fiction - a complete other world where, unlike our own, all the parts add up to something. When all is said and done, though, it's no more than a modestly entertaining beach read, and that only if you're in the hot sun and therefore not concentrating too hard on what you're reading. The novel is dark as the history itself and full of alarmingly disturbing thoughts. Even death and the afterlife are blips on this continuum. You may chose depending upon your predilections in that regard. Historic romance and adventure do not get any better than in this companion novel to the top-selling A Café on the Nile.
