The four main characters in "Waiting to Exhale" are Bernadine Harris, Savannah Jackson, Gloria Matthews, and Robin Stokes. Each character represents a different stage in life and faces unique challenges and struggles as they search for love and happiness.
Bernadine Harris is a successful businesswoman who has sacrificed her personal life for her career. She is divorced from her husband, who has left her for a younger woman, and is struggling to move on and find happiness. Bernadine is portrayed as a strong, independent woman who is determined to succeed in her career, but she also struggles with feelings of anger and resentment towards her ex-husband and the challenges she faces as a single woman.
Savannah Jackson is a television executive and the youngest of the four main characters. She is engaged to marry a wealthy businessman, but her relationships are complicated by her own insecurities and the expectations placed on her by her fiancé and his family. Savannah is a sensitive and caring person, but she often struggles to stand up for herself and assert her own desires and needs.
Gloria Matthews is a stay-at-home mom and the oldest of the four main characters. She is married to a successful doctor and has a teenage son, but she is unhappy in her marriage and feels unfulfilled and unappreciated by her husband. Gloria is a kind and loving person, but she is also struggling with feelings of loneliness and a lack of purpose in her life.
Robin Stokes is a music producer and the only single woman of the four main characters. She is successful in her career but is struggling to find a meaningful relationship and is tired of dating men who are not ready for commitment. Robin is portrayed as a confident and independent woman, but she also struggles with feelings of loneliness and a desire for a deeper connection with someone.
Overall, the characters in "Waiting to Exhale" are complex and multi-dimensional, each facing their own unique struggles and challenges as they search for love and happiness. Through their struggles and triumphs, they support and empower each other, forming a strong bond of friendship and sisterhood.

When her mother, struggling to care for Robin's father in Waiting to Exhale 4499 his affliction with Alzheimer's Disease, needed the borrowed money back, Bernadine made Robin a gift of it. Nevertheless, there is sufficient interaction among the four women when they meet and sufficient emotion displayed to consider them as a composite protagonist in a larger whole. Tarik criticizes Gloria's efforts to keep him "off the streets" and in the "best" school by living in a white neighborhood.

Every woman can relate to Savannah's horror at finding herself stuck with a clingy man who was introduced by friends, and every woman will sigh when Bernadine meets James, who may well be the perfect man aside from his wife. I love these four women and their trials and tribulations, especially with regard to the men in their lives. Bernadine has been desperately lonely, as bored and restless as her white neighbors who were being "not all that neighborly.
