William Carey was an English Baptist missionary and a pioneer of the modern missionary movement. He is often referred to as the "father of modern missions."
Born in 1761 in a small village in England, Carey was the son of a weaver and received only a basic education. Despite this, he developed a love for learning and taught himself Latin, Greek, and Hebrew in order to study the Bible more thoroughly.
In 1785, Carey became a pastor at a Baptist church in Leicester, where he became increasingly concerned about the lack of Christian evangelism in India. He believed that it was the duty of Christians to spread the gospel to all nations and argued that the Church should be more proactive in its missionary efforts.
In 1793, Carey and a group of fellow missionaries set sail for India, where they established the first Baptist mission in the country.
