William Carey was an English Baptist missionary and a pioneer of the modern missionary movement. He is often referred to as the "father of modern missions."

Born in 1761 in a small village in England, Carey was the son of a weaver and received only a basic education. Despite this, he developed a love for learning and taught himself Latin, Greek, and Hebrew in order to study the Bible more thoroughly.

In 1785, Carey became a pastor at a Baptist church in Leicester, where he became increasingly concerned about the lack of Christian evangelism in India. He believed that it was the duty of Christians to spread the gospel to all nations and argued that the Church should be more proactive in its missionary efforts.

In 1793, Carey and a group of fellow missionaries set sail for India, where they established the first Baptist mission in the country. Despite facing many challenges, including cultural differences and hostile opposition, Carey persevered and made significant contributions to the spread of Christianity in India.

In addition to his missionary work, Carey was also a skilled linguist and translator. He translated the Bible into several Indian languages, including Bengali and Sanskrit, and wrote numerous books and tracts on a variety of subjects, including theology, geography, and botany.

Carey's missionary efforts had a lasting impact on the Church and the modern missionary movement. He is remembered for his tireless dedication to spreading the gospel and for his willingness to serve others, even in the face of great adversity.
